Genesis 12-24

Reading Genesis 12-24, it went against what we believe to be normal now but it also made me question those who believe in the book of Genesis. I myself am a catholic and I have been baptized, I have done my communion and I also have been confirmed. After reading this, my faith has been weakened because I find morally wrong. Such as in Genesis 19 verse 33 and 34 where the daughters of Lot slept with him while he was somewhat drunk. To me or to anyone now, I consider that Incest which is very weird. The daughters of Lot considered it as them trying to preserve Lots lineage through them but there are other ways that the daughters of Lot could have preserved him in which they themselves could have gone to find a man to have a baby with. That struck me as very unusual and kind of question my belief even though I already am a very loose believer. Another thing that struck me but not in the unusual way as the daughters of Lot but in a  moral way was in Genesis 21 where Sarah wanted Hagar to be sent away which I felt was wrong because Hagar was brought to Abraham by Sarah and she just cast her away with her son, bread, and some water. I also noticed how Genesis 18, there was lack of faith in Sarah as she laughed when God said that she would bare Abraham a child. To me that reflected doubt in God which I myself do sometimes. Not only Sarah had doubt in the power of God, God himself questioned the faith of Abraham in Genesis 22, in verse 12 it was stated “for now I know that thou fearest God.” God did not fully believe that Abraham had complete faith in him so therefore he tested Abraham. Reading this made me realize how times have changed and also that there will always be doubt no matter how much certainty we have.

Alienation

  1. The Lord himself created alienation towards humanity when he decided to favor Abels offering instead of Cains from which that sprouted alienation between humanity itself when Cain decided to kill Abel. That just being the beginning, God saw that Cain faced further punishment and that he shall be cursed. Cain in response said “Behold, fyou have driven me todayaway from the ground, and gfrom your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and awanderer on the earth, hand whoever finds me will kill me”. Further increasing the alienation between Humanity and God himself. In Genesis 6, God had realized that he regret the creation of man and sought to destroy everything off the planet. This further pushes the distance between man and God because the lord himself is going to get rid of them. In Genesis 8, the lord realizes that man will always have evil in his heart even from youth. In Genesis 9, the sons of Noah were ashamed to look at him while he lied naked in his tame which shows a progression of distinction between humans as when Adam and Eve were created they were not ashamed of their bodies. In Genesis 11, The lord realized that the people were one and all speaking the same language and he deliberately decided to confuse them so they would not be able to understand each other, which is a sign of alienation between god and humanity. Lastly, in Genesis 11, Humans progressively began to live fewer years as it began from 400 years of age to 100 years of age.

Genesis 1&2

  1. According to Genesis 1, the world was created by God and how he saw it fit. First came the light as the world was covered in darkness. After the light came the expanse which separated the waters from waters, then came the heavens which hovered over the expanse, after the heavens came dry land and vegetation followed soon after. Days, months, years, and seasons followed after the vegetation. Two great lights were then created to shine over the days and nights, the sun ruled over the day and the moon ruled over the night. Animals were next in the chain of creations as the waters were no longer empty and the vegetation soon had inhabitants. Finally God created man in his own image. During these creations, following every creation, God said that it was good, it shows how God only wants to improve the world revealing good intentions.
  2. In Genesis 2, It talked about the creation of the garden of Eden. Needing someone to look after the garden, God created Adam. In the garden laid the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of evil and good. Noticing that Adam was alone, God created Eve. Ultimately Genesis explains the creation of man and woman

The Hymn of man

  1. The creation of man came through the omnipotent god called Purusa in which everything has come from him. He watches over all of earth and beyond. Purusa is also the god of immortality and everything grows through him in food. Through Purusa came Viraj who is the creator of man. Through the sacrifices of man came the other beast that live in the air, forest and the villages. The difference between the Hymn of man and the creation hymn is that the hymn of man is more certain about existence than the creation hymn. The creation hymn has no definitive answer as it consist of questions in regards of what came first or what was the first thing around? The creation hymn never really gave us a certain creator whereas the hymn of man stated that all things came from the gods Purusa and Viraj.
